Retinol Acne Treatment Systems
Does retinol have a place in your acne treatment system? You may already be using a product such as benzoyl peroxide to treat your acne but should you add a retinol acne product to your regime?
What is retinol?
Retinol is a vitamin A derivative which is fat soluble an an anti oxidant. It has been used very successfully to treat both the effects of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, sagging skin and also to improve the appearance of the skin of acne sufferers.
Retinol and the other retinoids are small molecules able to penetrate the epidermis and reach down into the deeper layers of the skin. This is important to realise as many ingredients sold as wonder ingredients for the skin, such as collagen, are large molecules which only sit on top of the skin and cannot do anything! When used as part of an acne treatment system retinol can aid in detaching excess cells from the hair follicles. Excess cells in the follicle cause an increase in the pus which encourages bacterial growth and pus filled pimples called comedones form. Removing the excess cells allows the puss to drain out preventing the formation of comedones.
In addition retinol helps to repair damage to the elastin and collagen in the skin so an added benefit is a healthier looking skin and overall improved skin texture. Research has shown that retinol works by attaching itself to receptors on the membrane of the skin cells and helps in the cells functioning and reproduction.
Cautions
Retinol is safe to use but please be aware that it can cause some side effects such as reddening, irritation or itching when first used. These should subside in a day or two but if you experience any soreness or irritation that is severe or the effects last for longer than three or four days stop using the product and consult a dermatologist. These occurrences are very rare. In addition the skin’s sensitivity to the sun can be increased by the use of retinol products so always use a good sunscreen (always a good idea anyway!) even when the day is overcast. You can minimise this effect by only using the product at night.
Conclusion
Retinol, while not directly killing acne bacteria, is a useful addition for fighting acne. It will improve the appearance of the skin, help to prevent comedones and leave your skin soft and smooth. Overall retinol skin care products are useful in your fight against acne as well as helping to keep your skin smooth and in good condition.
